Its principal activities include networked IT services, local, national and international telecommunications services, and higher-value broadband and internet products and services. In the year ended 31 March 2006 (the 2005/2006 financial year), 87% of our revenues were derived from operations within the UK, where we are the largest communications service provider, serving over 20 million business and residential customers with more than 28 million exchange lines, as well as providing network services to other licensed operators. Our employees include many who are world leaders in their specialist fields, working at the forefront of new technologies and standards development in areas such as broadband applications and services, IP and data networks, IT, mobility, network design and management, and business applications. We provide research, development and consulting services for BT, developing innovative technological ideas and solutions that translate into practical and marketable solutions for the business. Our labs played a leading role in the development of global communications standards and we inherit from them a science and engineering base acknowledged widely as second to none. BT invested £727 million in Research and Development in 2005/2006 to support our drive for innovation.This investment comprised capitalised software development costs of £401 million and R&D operating costs of £326 million. BT is an active participant in European collaborative R&D through its participation in EU Framework Programmes and has participated in all the past Programmes, primarily in the IST area. BT is represented in MASTER by staff from the IT Futures Centre, one of several research centres in BT Group Chief Technology Office, and located at Adastral Park, Ipswich. Brief cv’s of key staff contributing to the project are given below. Key personnel Paul Kearney leads the BT team in MASTER. He is Head of Enterprise Risk Research in the IT Futures Centre of BT Group CTO, where he has responsibility for building a research programme in Enterprise Risk Management around a number of internal, university, and FP7 collaborative projects. He has recently been working on secondment to the Business Continuity practice in BT Global Services helping develop a portfolio around the concept of the Resilient Enterprise, and continues in that role part time. He is also active in the research community beyond BT, playing a leading role in current and past collaborative research projects and various working groups and programme committees. Particular interests include architectures for managing trust and security in open distributed systems, and model-driven approaches to design of secure solutions. Paul has a BSc and PhD in theoretical physics and worked for British Aerospace and Sharp Laboratories of Europe in R&D roles before joining BT in 1997. He is a Member if the Institute of Information Security Professionals and a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Andy Jones is Head of Information Security Research in the IT Futures Centre in BT Group CTO. He leads research into computer forensics, anomaly detection and the development of a risk management methodology. In addition he holds a post as a visiting adjunct at Edith Cowan University in Australia. He has a background in the Army and Defence Research and has written four books on a range of topics in the Information Security area. He has also managed the annual BT sponsored second-hand hard disk study which is carried out in conjunction with the University Of Glamorgan in Wales, Longwood University in the USA and Edith Cowan University in Australia. Thomas Martin is a Researcher at the Information Technology Futures Research Centre at BT. He holds a BSc from the National University Ireland, Galway, an MSc in Information Theory from University College Cork and a Ph.D. in Cryptography from the Information Security Group at Royal Holloway University of London. Before joining the centre, Thomas worked on a number of research projects in the Security Research Centre (SRC). His main areas of research included Policy Management, Digital Rights Management, Model Driven Architecture and Bayesian Networks. Nektarios (Aris) Georgalas holds a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering, an MPhil in Computation and a PhD in Computer Science. He joined BT in 1998 and has since undertaken the roles of Researcher, Senior Researcher and Principal Researcher. During his career with BT he has been actively involved and has managed numerous collaborative and internal research projects in areas such as active networks, market-driven data management systems, policy-based management, distributed information systems and SOA/Web Services. He currently focuses on Product Lifecycle Management and Rapid Service Assembly for the Communication Service Provider 2.0. Nektarios has led numerous international collaborations on the application of Model Driven Architecture and the NGOSS standards in telecoms OSS environments and has been very active leading and contributing in key programmes within the TeleManagement Forum. He holds 5 patents, has authored more than 30 papers and is frequently invited as a speaker at International Conferences. Involvement/Role in the project BT’s role in MASTER centres on model-based software tools for use at design-time and run-time. We are leading Activity 3, which is concerned with design-time methods and tools, and within it, Work Package 3.2, which will produce a Protection and Assessment Workbench. On the run-time side, we are working on the control cockpit in Work Package 6.1. We are also contributing to definition and elaboration of the key MASTER concepts in Activity 2, and will help apply and assess the methods and tools we are responsible for bay participating in the Activity 1 Case Studies.
