SAP AG and its SAP Research Business Unit

SAP Research is the technology research department of SAP and as an integral part of SAP's R&D activities, SAP Research is responsible for identifying, researching, understanding, developing and evaluating new and emerging technologies, processes and e-business solutions that strategically influence the future of SAP business applications.
SAP Research is a Global Business Unit under the direction of SAP AG operating Research Centers in various countries. These Centers are usually co-located with Academic Partners and focused on specific research topics. Depending on the particular needs of the projects, SAP Research will consider to distribute work packages among its locations in order to engage Researchers with the required expertise. This will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the execution of the project.
With the focus on applied research, SAP Research bridges the gap between open, collaborative research with external partners and exploitation into new or existing SAP product lines through SAP´s development groups.

In the context of this document, SAP refers to SAP AG and its SAP Research Business Unit.

SAP Research has identified six long-term and global research programs, including Security & Trust, which will run the MASTER project. With its deep expertise in the areas of Business Process Security, Authorisation, Trust Management, Context-aware Security and Security Engineering, and its previous and ongoing involvement in major EU funded projects in the area (including TrustCom, Serenity, MOSQUITO, WASP, ITAIDE, R4eGov and others), SAP Research is well positioned to achieve the objectives of MASTER and lead the project to success.

Key personnel

Volkmar Lotz has received his diploma in Computer Science from the University of Kaiserslautern in 1988. Since November 2004, he is the Research Program Manager for Security and Trust at SAP Research. His responsibilities include the definition and implementation of SAP's security research agenda, its strategic alignment to SAP's business needs, and the maintenance of a global research partner network. From 1989 to 2004, he was affiliated with Siemens Corporate Technology, first in the Software Engineering Department, then, since 1994, in the Security Department. From 1999 to 2004, he was heading the Formal Methods in Security Analysis group, emphasizing on security requirements engineering, evaluation and certification, cryptographic protocol verification, mobile code security, context-aware mobile systems, and legally binding mobile agent transactions. He has been the main contributor to the LKW model, a formal security model for smartcard processors, which allowed for the Infineon SLE66 processor to be the first smartcard hardware being certified according to ITSEC E4 and Common Criteria EAL5. His current research interests include Business Process Security, Service Security, Authorisation, Security Engineering, and Compliance. Volkmar Lotz has published numerous scientific papers in his area of interest and is regularly serving on Programme Committees of internationally renowned conferences and workshops.
Emmanuel Pigout joined SAP Research Security & Trust in 2008 to take over the management of European founded projects. Prior to joining SAP, he has a proven track of more than 14 years of working experience in management, development and consulting for some of the European's biggest financial institutions. Results driven Project Manager, he is also an expert in the Risk Managment. In 2000, created his own company in the e-marketing where he has patented several innovations in the DRM fields. Emmanuel has an engineer's diploma of the "Ecole Superieure en Informatique, Electronique et Automatique" (E.S.I.E.A.) with a specialization in systems and networks.
Hoon Wei Lim is a researcher in SAP Labs France since March 2008. Before joining SAP, he was a post-doctoral researcher in Royal Holloway, University of London, working in an e-Science project funded by the UK EPSRC. In the project, he designed security architectures and access control mechanisms for grid systems using pairing-based cryptographic techniques. He obtained his PhD in Information Security from Royal Holloway as well.

Philip Miseldine prior to joining SAP Research, Dr. Philip Miseldine completed his PhD at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, specialising in the areas of self-adaptive system architecture, and knowledge representation. He has authored / co-authored over 25 International publications resulting from his work. At SAP, Philip is working in the area of security and trust, focusing on runtime adaptive rule and workflow specification and optimisation.

Involvement/Role in the project

SAP has the role of technology director. It will ensure the coordination of technical Activities, take the general responsibility for technical aspects and the development of MASTER basic architecture. SAP will also lead the activity 4 in charge of the obesrvation infrastructure.
